The total population of Brunei Darussalam is projected to increase from 450,500 persons in 2023 to 539,000 persons in 2040, representing an annual average growth rate of 1.1 per cent.
The number of Local Residents (Brunei Citizens and Permanent Residents) is projected to increase, from 368,300 persons in 2023 to 440,600 persons in 2040. The Temporary Residents is projected to increase, from 82,200 persons in 2023 to 98,400 persons in 2040.
From the age distribution aspect, there will be a significant increase in the number of working age group population. Over the next 17 years, the number of populations aged 15-64 years is projected to increase from 328,000 persons in 2023 to 377,600 persons in 2040. The number of populations aged 0-14 years is projected to increase from 91,200 persons in 2023 to 106,700 persons in 2040, and the population aged 65 and above is projected to increase from 31,300 persons in 2023 to 54,700 persons in 2040.
Brunei Muara District remained projected to be the most populated district with 390,100 persons, comprising 72.4 per cent of the total population in 2040. This was followed by Belait District (14.8 per cent or 79,900 persons), Tutong District (10.6 per cent or 57,400 persons) and Temburong District (2.2 per cent or 11,600 persons).
