Latest Highlights Q1 2026
1. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Flows:
FDI Flows in Brunei Darussalam recorded a negative net inflow of BND192.8 million in Q1 2026. The decline was driven by a decrease in debt instruments, amounting to -BND743.9 million, mainly due to loan repayments by FDI companies in Brunei Darussalam to their parent and sister companies. Meanwhile, equity investments increased in Q1 2026, totaling BND551.1 million, due to higher capital injection and higher profits reinvested.
The negative FDI inflows were mainly driven by the Mining and Quarrying sector, amounting to -BND243.4 million. This was followed by Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities, which accounted for -BND16.6 million, and Wholesale and Retail Trade, amounting to -BND8.8 million.
2. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Stock:
FDI stock also decreased by 1.8 per cent quarter-on-quarter, from BND9,060.6 million in Q4 2025 to BND8,894.2 million in Q1 2026. The decrease was mainly driven by debt instruments, which declined by 33.9 per cent to BND1,351.2 million. Meanwhile, equity increased by 7.5 per cent to BND7,543.0 million.
The Manufacturing sector remained the largest contributor to FDI stock in Q1 2026, accounting for 45.2 per cent, followed by the Mining and Quarrying sector at 28.1 per cent, and Financial and Insurance Activities at 15.0 per cent. By country, Hong Kong SAR was the main contributor to FDI stock in Brunei Darussalam at 40.9 per cent, followed by the United Kingdom at 28.4 per cent and the Netherlands at 8.2 per cent.
